ONE of the last tasks of the late Peter Waieng was to reopen Kundiawa airport, his friend Ben Micah says.

Micah, the State Enterprises Minister, said this in Kundiawa, Chimbu, on Wednesday after he arrived with Waieng’s body.

The Air Niugini flight that brought Waieng’s body was the first into Kundiawa in three years.

Micah announced the resumption of normal flights into Chimbu, which the people welcomed.

Kundiawa airport had been closed for three years.

The late Waieng was killed on Aug 22 at the Napa Napa oil refinery, in Port Moresby.

Officer in charge of Central province criminal investigation division Sergeant Raymond Boiyamo told NBC News Waieng was believed to have died of loss of blood from two stab wounds – one down his collar bone and another on the right side of his stomach.

He was a member of parliament for Kundiawa-Gembogl from 1997-2002.

He studied at the universities of Papua New Guinea and Wollongong, gaining a master’s degree in politics.
