THE Milne Bay government has allocated K300,000 to fix the deteriorating infrastructures for both the warders and prisoners at the Giligili prison, deputy governor Tom Cameron says.
“We have allocated K100,000 to support the maintenance of staff houses and K200,000 to improve the prison for the prisoners living condition,” he said.
Cameron said this during the PNG Correctional Services Remembrance Day at Giligili prison.
“In the province, we have low internal revenue generation and depend on the National Government.
“The Covid-19 and economic challenges faced last year did not help the situation.
“However, I am pleased that we are still able to help PNGCS provide their services to our people.
“I am also aware that the roll-out of the rural lock-up programme is a priority of PNGCS and we look forward to supporting building of Kiriwina rural lock-up and the other rural lock-up at Misima.”
Cameron thanked the landowners of Giligili for providing their land for the Government to host the prison.
He acknowledged and remembered Correctional Services warders who had passed away while on duty.
