Milne Bay is an integral part of the bigger Papua New Guinea family, Deputy Prime Minister, Treasurer and Alotau MP Charles Abel says.
Abel addressed a big crowd who turned up at the annual Milne Bay Day and said he was proud to be a part of that community of people.
He and his family attended the events at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby where he commended the University of PNG Milne Bay Students Union and Milne Bay Community Association.
“I’m proud to be part of this day and Milne Bay community and happy that the Milne Bay people are renowned for being peaceful and friendly,” he said of the event on Saturday. “We look forward to celebrating the Alotau town 50th anniversary and independence anniversary in September, and the Kenu Festival in November.”
Abel said Prime Minister Peter O’Neill will visit Alotau on Sep 14 to open the new Alotau town mall.
“Alotau is the home of the Alotau Accord 1 and 2,”Abel said.
The funds raised at the Milne Bay Day fund projects in schools and health centres. The event featured cultural dances from the province.
Milne Bay people in the National Capital District represent the four districts of Alotau, Esa’ala, Kiriwina-Goodenough and Samarai-Murua.
They also represent the cultures of Kiriwina, Suddest, Rossel, Calverdors Chain and down to Bonabona and all the way along through Suau Coast up to Gogosiba, Daga, Makamaka and Maramatana to the inland people of Dawa, Kanasi, Kagabai, Umanakaina and Huhu in central Alotau.
