AWARENESS on the dangers of illegal mining will be highlighted at a mine safety event at Porgera Gold Mine next week.

Blood pressure and sugar level checks together with recently introduced audiometry and spirometry testing would make up half of the health initiative components.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) voluntary testing and vaccination would also be available to employees.

Barrick occupational health and safety manager James Browning said: “The audiometry and spirometry testing will give employees the opportunity to test their hearing and to know the health status of their lungs.”

Other activities would include Porgera leadership team (PLT) lecture and talks to employees at jobsites for day and night shift workers on important health and safety-related policies.

There would also be emergency response (ER) and hazardous substance management drills.

Competitions on fire extinguishing and fighting skills would be held.

Schools would be involved in campus visits, safety poster and essay competitions.
