Mine safety week kicks off with fun run

‘MAJOR HAZARDS’ is the theme for Mining Safety Week at Ok Tedi Mining Ltd (Otml).
The Mineral Resources Authority (MRA)-sanctioned week is recognised each year by mining projects in PNG.
The week started off on Sunday with an early morning fun run/walk that took place at Ok Tedi’s operational sites in Tabubil, Kiunga and Port Moresby.
It was attended by employees, contractor partners and dependents.
Ok Tedi managing director and chief executive Peter Graham, said the focus has been on major risks present in Ok Tedi’s work sites and environment.
“A major hazard is a risk in our environment that has potentially significant consequences, either for the individual, the environment or equipment,” he said.
“Like every industry, the mine industry has its share of major hazards.
“It is incumbent on us, regardless of where we work – the mine, the mill, the port, in logistics or even in an office environment – to understand the major hazards that exist in our work environment. But perhaps, more importantly, to understand the controls to either eliminate or mitigate those risks in our workplace.”
The event ends on Friday.
