LIHIR High School (LHS) now has improved facilities, thanks to the Newcrest Lihir.
The support is under the firm’s Tax Credit Scheme (TCS) project.
School board of governors chairman, Gabriel Tukus thanked Newcrest for the work done to repair and improve the school facilities
He said without the TCS and Newcrest, the new school refurbishment and infrastructure would not have been possible.
“2014 is a special year for LHS as it is the pioneering year with Year 12 being offered for the very first time,” Tukus said.
He said with the schools new facelift, students were now returning to LHS from other schools across New Ireland to complete Grades 11 and 12.
“We have 166 students across these two grades, which is a great reflection on the school’s reputation, facilities and the quality of the teaching.”
He said there had always been excellent communication between Newcrest and the LHS stakeholders and they were looking forward to getting stage 1 of TCS projects fully completed this year.
Newcrest general manager Karl Spaleck said the quality schools and education were the most important benefit for Lihir community and good facilities was a number one priority for them.
