The Apec Business Adviser Council announced at a signing ceremony yesterday that Newcrest Mining was the first platinum sponsor of the Apec CEO summit.
As the largest company on the Port Moresby Stock Exchange (PomSoX) and the largest miner in the country, Newcrest will use its platinum sponsorship to support the PNG Government at the summit, an important event in the country’s history.
Chairman of the PNG Abac secretariat Wayne Golding said there would be eight sponsors each in the two categories of gold and the platinum.
Golding said the platinum sponsorship was US$275,000 (K876,000) and gold sponsorship was worth US$175,000 (K557,000).
He said Newcrest was the first to sign the commitment and although others have made commitments they have to sign the agreement.
“This hosting of the 2018 Apec is an honour and will require all PNG’s skills and capabilities, supported by the friends of PNG to host the Asia-Pacific’s largest economic grouping,” he said. “We thank Newcrest and other sponsors for their generosity.”
Abac chairman David Toua said all their efforts this year required massive support.
“We are grateful to a number of sponsors and we are grateful to Newcrest for coming on board, it’s an exciting year, very well supported and we look forward to 2018 unfolding,” he said.
Newcrest executive general manager Ian Kemish said he has seen events like the Apec summit in other countries and as someone who knows and loves PNG, he was excited that
the event was coming to “this country.”
