Minister: Education to receive big share
The National, Tuesday 20th November, 2012
EDUCATION will receive a big share of the budget which will be unveiled in parliament today, Education Minister Paru Aihi said yesterday.
“There will be a lot of money going towards the education sector,” he said during the reopening of Kerevat National High School in East New Britain.
“I am not going to pre-empt anything but let me tell you that I am very comfortable about the funding that is going to the education sector.
“I am excited about it and together with the National education board, and the hierarchy of the Education Department, we will ensure that there is no corruption in the department.
“We want to make sure that the money goes right down to the schools across the nation.”
Corrupt activities have been taking place in the education sector for too long and he will urgently address the issue.
Aihi said the school had been a victim of “corrupt activities” resulting in disruption to classes in the past two years.
“Kerevat National High School has had a fair share of corrupt activities and there were individuals who corrupted the system.
“This is the reason why the school was not able to function properly in 2010 and 2011.
“But I am happy that things are returning to normalcy,” he said.
