Mendi-Munihu district development authority has paid the second lot of school-fee subsidy for students from the district attending tertiary institutions.
Local MP and Works and Implementation Minister Michael Nali has prioritised education and has accommodated school-fee subsidies under his development plan.
It is a relief for unemployed parents from rural areas.
District development authority chief executive Pora Nema said the second batch of 200 students had received their subsidy.
“The DDA has paid a total of K750,000 to various tertiary institutions for 375 students in the first and second batches,” he said.
“We are now working on the third batch of students.”
Nema said Nali was concerned at the hike in school fees and had talked with his DDA members to assist struggling parents “It is not an easy task screening and making sure that genuine students’ fees are paid,” he said.
“Many are pretending and we are having a hard time. That is why in the beginning, DDA said students will be assisted with the money if they present their certificates and acceptance letters from a recognised institution in the country.
“The office will be strict and will be looking at helping those genuine students.”
Nema said the DDA understood that school fees varied and had agreed upon a maximum amount of K2000 per student,
