THE presence of members of parliament at public gatherings is seen as important to Papua New Guineans, Madang MP Nixon Duban said.

Speaking at the Madang Teachers College on Saturday, Duban said many Papua New Guineans tend to think that their MPs’ presence tell them that their MPs were actually performing their duties.

“We MPs are legislators of government policies and are very busy people to attend to all sorts of commitments, but if I don’t come and physically give you this assistance, that is not performance so I must come,” Duban said.

He said some MPs work and plan ahead for the smooth running of this country and did not have the time to attend to all their businesses and appointments, so they skipped some.

He said people needed all sorts of services everywhere and demanded the presence of their MPs without realising the headaches some of their MPs faced trying to attend to every commitment at once.
