COMMERCE and Industry Minister William Samb has encouraged a Madang rugby union team to not only concentrate on sports, but get involved in business.
He made the challenge to Madang 6B Pirates when presenting K10,000 to help the team compete in last weekend’s Greater Sepik Sevens rugby union tournament at Pora Oval in Wewak.
Samb said Papua New Guinea had an abundance of talented sportsmen and women.
“We have women’s rugby union and cricket teams representing the country and have done extremely well,” he said.
“We have a vast pool of talents.
“The next generation must continue from where the older ones have left off in sports.
“We have to start developing ourselves.
“The Government has done the right thing by setting up the Sports Ministry.
“It should be a standalone ministry to address sports matters.
“The Government is consistent with its Vision 2050 and has got plans for sports at a larger scale.
“Our prime minister says that we will not leave a child behind.
“It is up to relevant ministers to take to their departments and identify where they fit in.” Samb said his ministry was promoting the growth of businesses at all levels.
He challenged Pirates not only to be a rugby union team, but establish a business to create employment for each player.
Samb urged the team to provide a business plan and acquittals for the K10,000.
Pirates president Bethany Kauke thanked Samb for the assistance.
She said the club had already come up with programmes, but required financial assistance to implement them.
Pirates are made up of unemployed youths in and around Ward Seven of New Town in the Madang Urban local-level government area.
They encourage youths to concentrate on sports and refrain from illegal activities.
