Ministers open new K2m Sabama Market

 MORESBY North-West residents can now sell food stuff in favourable and hygienic conditions following the opening of their new market.  

The Sabama Market was opened by Moresby North-West MP Justin Tkatchenko, National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop and National Planning Minister Charles Abel.

“This is the start of a brand new day and a new beginning for the Moresby South electorate,” Tkatchenko said.

The K2 million market was funded through the District Services Improvement Programme with counterpart funding of K1 million from the Provincial Services Improvement Programme.

He said the market was designed by him with the assistance of the Sabama Community for comfort, health and safety. “Over 15 years, the market has been a rubbish dump with conditions fit for pigs. It was a health hazard,” he said.

“The market will be managed under the Moresby South Marketing Board, of which I will be the chairman. It will have a manager, 10 security guards, eight cleaners and 10 community police stationed within the vicinity of the market.

“The market revenue collection has been designed in such a way that we will know how much the market is making. The whole idea is to make revenue to make it self-sustaining.”

Youth leader Peter Kelvin said they would do whatever was necessary to attract customers to the market.

“There will be no hold-ups, car thefts and other criminal activities associated with most of our markets in the city,” he said.
