Minj ‘T’ Primary in dire need of refurbishment

MINJ  ‘T’ Primary School, the oldest in South Waghi district, is in dire need of basic infrastructure.
School board chairman Danny Mond and headmistress Judith Oppo said the 43-year-old classrooms and teachers houses were in dire need of an upgrade or replacement.
“All the buildings built during the colonial period are falling apart, with timbers rotting away.
 “Since the establishment of the school in 1957, there has only been one or two new classrooms built,” Mrs Oppo said.
The duo said the administration had repaired a few buildings with limited funds collected from school fees but required more funding from external sources.
Mrs Oppo said before she took over from the previous administration two years ago, there was no money left for her to work with.
Seeing the ailing condition of the school, she said she went to Port Moresby last year to source for funds and received K67,000 from the school support grant by the National Government after she presented a submission for an administration building.
She said she then engaged a local contractor to build the administration block that was eventually officiated.
“The school year begins and teachers need space and we need to open the building.”
“This school needs attention from local elites and Government of all levels to fix the ailing infrastructure,” parents representative Ger Dau said.
