ENGA Mioks skipper David Loko lifted his teammates in the preliminary final of the Digicel Cup to a comprehensive 48-20 win over Mendi Muruks at the Johnson Siki oval, Wabag, on Sunday.
Loko was inspirational in a wholesome 80-minute display, beginning with his part in the opening try of the match to hooker Leon Cletus.
Loko made a break and was the first of eight sets of hands to handle the ball on the way to the Muruks’ line, Cletus ending with the ball on the line.
Assistant coach Timothy Lepa was upbeat about his captain’s performance.
“This is the third week he has been awarded the man of the match. He led with his work rate and showed his leadership quality, and that lifted his team.
Inhouse issues were not good for us last week because Loko decided not to play, but we sorted that out now and have come together. There is high team spirit now,” Lepa said.
Lepa added that the 10-16 loss to the Muruks two weeks ago in Lae had given them an insight into areas of their play, and that the team had worked really hard all week and all of yesterday for the result.
Mioks went to the break 20-12 ahead, but the second half rush of tries by the visitors through Wesa Tenza, Felix Tangue and Werr Mark caught the homeside on the back foot for a fair bit of the half.
Charlie Wabo, Mark and Joseph Omae instigated the comeback but could not lead it to the end.
Loko followed his first half try up with another in the second, and then centre Pasu Awane, and Oliver Kerry ensured they remained out of reach.
Five-eighth Charlie Simon kicked seven out of eight attempts for a golden performance with the boot.
