THE Enga Mioks booked the first spot in the Digicel Cup grand final with a 16-6 win over Waghi Tumbe in Lae yesterday.
In the other match of the double-header, the Goroka Lahanis beat the Agmark Gurias 14-12 to keep their season alive.
The Mioks-Tumbe game was riddled with errors from both teams, however, the Enga side were first on the board after winger Robert Kronis scored out wide and halfback Roger Laka converted for a 6-0 lead. But the lead was short-lived as Tumbe picked up the pace to reply with a try to Joshua Nani, who scored next to the uprights.
Israel Balio converted to lock the scores at 6-6.
The second stanza had players from both teams putting their bodies on the line, with Mioks captain Supa Kokote, Eddie Daffa, Emmanuel John, Kot Kerua and Israel Steven up going up against Tumbe’s Daniel Pai, Frank Kagai, Nani, Andrew Sipi and Supa Korken. Mioks were presented an opportunity to take the lead after Henry Wan was penalised for lifting.
But Laka failed the convert the penalty. With 14 minutes left on the clock, Woods Kawage crossed over from dummy half to give the Mioks a 10-6 lead.
Laka then added the extras to push the Mioks further in front.
The game went down to the wire, with Kokote setting up kronis for the match winner.
Mioks 16 (Kronis 2, Kawage tries, Roger Laka 2 con) Tumbe 6 (Nani try, Balio 1 con)
