DIGITEC Communications Ltd is rolling out its mobile network, becoming the third mobile operator in the country.
The others are Digicel and Kumul Telikom Holdings Ltd (KTHL), the operator of bmobile and Telikom PNG Ltd.
Digitec Communications Ltd advertised vacancies in The National on Monday, stating that it was rolling out a new mobile network.
Acting secretary of the Department of Communications and Information Technology Steven Matainaho told The National that the National Information Communications Technology Authority (Nicta) issued a licence to the new operator two years ago.
But Matainaho declined to say when the new operator will start operating, as it was under Nicta’s jurisdiction as the regulator to confirm.
“At this stage I cannot confirm when exactly the operator will begin its services,” he said.
Nicta could not be reached yesterday for comment on the matter.
Digitec Communications Ltd also declined to comment.
State-owned Telikom PNG is 60 years old.
Telikom was carved up in 2009, creating bmobile and later its wholesale arm PNG Dataco.
Telikom, bmobile and Dataco are subsidiaries of Kumul Telikom Holdings Ltd.
Meanwhile, the Caribbean mobile phone network company Digicel entered the country in 2007.

  • Digicel is a big reap off , stealing from their million customers every day. So it up to the PNG people to recognized these theft that’s going on…

  • Competition is healthy for our country…..Digicel has manipulated, because BMobil can’t match their marketing strategies.
A third player is very good.

  • I agree with the comments. Yes welcome DIGITEC and give a good challenge to digicel because they think that they are the only one who will rule communication systems in PNG when everyone already knows that they are truly selfish.

  • well png use telikom,b mobile our own net work company which we have IT Training colledge to assist repair it net work.

  • Digicel is a big time day light robber. It’s products and services are designed only to steal from it’s customers. NICTA must seriously look into this matter.Welcome the new mobile operator.

  • Digitech is of Fijian, India and Austalian indian company origin. Why won’t the government give opportunities to Papua New Guineans to participate in such business opportunities?

  • I really wish Digitech gives a good competition to Digicel. Digicel is really becoming a monopoly in the market. B-mobile lacks coverage to compete with Digicel. The same issue is faced by Telikom also.
Please extend coverage so you can be a good competitor….Don’t just go for cheap rates while the network quality is not up to standard.
B-mobile and Telikom has cheap data rates but they are very slow and their network is limited in certain places in urban.
