Communication and Information Technology and Energy Minister Sam Basil has given a final warning to mobile phone users to register their phones by April 30.
He was speaking on Monday while registering his Digicel, Telikom and bmobile-vodafone SIM cards in Port Moresby.
“I also have not registered so I’m now registering at Digicel, bmobile and Telikom,” Basil said.
“Today, I get the opportunity, as the minister for communication, to register and that by April 30, I will not have my communication cut off.
“You have to register now if you have not registered, because if you get cut off, you must not blame the operator, Government or me.
“You will bear the consequences, so please make an effort to go to the nearest outlet to register.
“There will be no extension as we have already done that.
“Anyone who has not registered will have their communications cut off by their respective mobile phone operators.
“We have given extension since December (2017) and it is four months now, so there will be no excuses.
“National Information and Communications Technology Authority (Nicta) has already authorised mobile phone providers to cut off communications of the unregistered mobile phone users after seven days from now.
“Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit is coming up and we have to show other countries that Papua New
Guinea is part of a global community.
“We have to adhere to rules.
“Other countries are also registering their mobile phone users.”
Basil said Nicta, PNG Council of Churches and councillors were working together to register villagers with mobile phones in rural areas.
“About 70 per cent of mobile phone users throughout the country have already registered,” he said.
