Mola must get his priorities right

I REFER to Prof Glen Mola’s comments “Build PMC using private funds” (Nov 29).
It shows he is business-minded.
I heard him over the radio telling the people that building PMC was not a good idea; instead the government must spend money on maintaining and upgrading the current hospitals and health centres in country.
Now, he wants PMC to be built but using private funds.
Why does he want PMC to be built using private funds?
Is he trying to protect his business?
He should not be business-minded when it comes to dealing with people’s lives.
He wants PMC to be built using private funds so that there will be competition.
If it was funded and operated by the government, then the services provided would be free or at least at a reasonable cost.
It will then affect his private hospital as potential clients will turn to the PMC.
I believe this is the main reason why he wants PMC to be built using private funds.
The government will always be here while private firms come and go as their main motive is all about profit.
It is very common to hear and read about people organising fund raising activities to enable sick patients to fly overseas to get medical treatment simply because we do not have the equipment and facilities here to do so.
MPs and the well-to-do are able to fly overseas and seek treatment because they have the means to do so.
This is not the case for the grassroots.
Building PMC, even if it were to cost more then K500 million, is worth it.
It will benefit us, taxpayers, and all ordinary Papua New Guineans in the long run.
The treatment cost will be far lower than flying overseas.
I believe it is in the best interest of the country that the PMC is funded by our government.
As such, I call on the government to seriously consider its decision not to fund the PMC.
