COMMUNITY leaders in Mendi, Southern Highlands province, are concerned about the lack of service and unregulated movement of public servants in and out of the provincial capital.
Mendi town youth chairman John Mombulu said for some reason, a good number of staff from the provincial administration in Mendi were not at work.
He said their absence had hampered administrative processes that led to effective service delivery.
“They should stay with the people and help,” he said.
He called on Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to intervene and address the problem.
He said the provincial administrator’s contract had expired three months ago and that could be the reason public servants “are all over the place”.
“Although he (the administrator) is still occupying the office, his term has lapsed,” he said.
Mombulu said the election was two months away and the Prime Minister and the National Executive Council “must appoint a new administrator so that the province can be managed well and services delivered to the 600,000-plus people”.
“The new administrator must be qualified and have the heart to serve the people,” he said.
Mombulu said the government should give priority to elites from Mendi town as past experience had shown that people from other parts of the province “have colluded with politicians and cronies and stolen thousands from the provincial coffers”.
