ROAD accidents is on the rise due to lack of monitoring and control of vehicles on public streets, an official says.
Road Traffic Authority Chief Executive Officer, Nelson Terema said the public needed to be aware that although the Road Traffic Authority has been mandated by law to monitor and control the public transport in Port Moresby, it needed a centralised information technology system to implement these.
He said due to numerous concerns being raised by the public on what RTA is doing to address the rise in road accidents in the city and measures taken to monitor and control public transport.
“The IT system would really help in addressing the high road accident rate in our country,” he said.
He said road accidents is on the rise throughout the country thus in addressing this issue RTA has embarked on centralized IT system to improve;

  • Driver licensing
  • Vehicle registration
  • Licensing of heavy vehicles
  • Licensing of inspection stations (roadworthiness)

“When all these things are centralized, we believe that all these road accidents would be eliminated.
“When managed by the centralized system it would make it easy for RTA and its stakeholders to monitor and control vehicles on public streets.
“If we have a centralised system to monitor and control vehicles on Public Street it would really help us to enhance our work in the land transport sector,” he said.
He said the centralized IT system would also provide statistics and data to the police, the department of National Planning and Monitoring and Transport Department, Department of Works and the provincial governments and the National Capital District Commission (NCDC)
“RTA is unable to perform because of the delay by the Central Tenders and Suppliers Board, it has taken almost two years.”
He said since Papua New Guinea will be hosting the Asia Pacific Economic Corporation summit this year, RTA urgently needs to these system to address the current situation in Port Moresby especially the public transport.
