NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has urged city residents to discourage their children from spraying paint on public properties such as bus-stop shelters.
He said the amount of graffiti on newly erected bus stop shelters built through Chinese aid around the city was so disappointing.
“I am fuming and disgusted. But I understand (it is the work of) mainly young kids. I want to call on their parents to teach their children good values,” he said.
He said there was a submission before the National Capital District Commission board to control the sale of spray paints.
“It will be licensed to sell and licence to buy. We will also put in place CCTV soon to help us catch the perpetrators. There is also a plan to get rid of the graffiti and monitor the nuisance.”
He said it was not just about Apec but the capital city moving forward.
He was also concerned about the red stains of betel nut spittle defacing pavements on newly built roads.
“Really disgusting but much better than before. We will get there but we need more effort to present a positive image for the world (leaders) visiting us. It’s an opportunity for us to show the best of PNG. Chewing and spitting is not the best (image) of PNG.”
