More expected from hospital with less funds

THE Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) is expected to do more with less resources however the staff should continue to strive to provide the best possible healthcare to the people, an official says.
Chief executive officer Dr Paki Molumi said this during the PMGH dedication service yesterday.
He said there was much to do in order for the hospital to perform as a true Level 7 specialised referral hospital and the dedication service was important because “without the Lord in front we cannot move forward”.
“We can have plans, all the human resource and everything but without God – all these visions that we set, we will not going achieve,” he said.
Dr Molumi said the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic last year was challenging and many plans were not implemented but there was no reason for the hospital not to implement its strategic plan this year to improve its services.
Dr Molumi said the offload strategy would ensure the National Capital District Health Authority, Central and Gulf health authorities step up and take over some of the roles while PMGH concentrate on delivering specialist care.
“Patients are referred from other parts of the country to PMGH and we start another referral process here – by telling them to go overseas,” Dr Molumi said.
“For those who can afford it’s okay for them, but most patients who cannot afford, it’s like saying ‘you can go home and die’.”
“That has been the pain of the patients that we have seen.
“We need money to drive our plans and improve services.
“This year we have a budget cut of about K10 million and we are expected to do more.”
