More than 200 teachers in ENB off payroll: Official

More than 200 teachers in East New Britain are off the payroll, says provincial education advisor Hubert Wangun.
He said the teachers were not paid on March 27 because their personal information was outdated.
Wangun told The National in Kokopo that the 230 teachers may have not been paid because of late resumption-of-duty forms, or submission of wrong information to the Department of Education salary section.
He said provincial education officers had visited most schools during the resumption week and briefed teachers on all requirements of the NDOE.
“Our salary officers in the province are working around the clock to fix the problem,” Wangun said.
“Hopefully, 70 per cent of the 230 will receive their pay next payday, while the other 30 per cent will receive their pay the following payday.”
Wangun said the 230 teachers were from all school levels from elementary to secondary.
Our Lady of Scared Heart (OLSH) Girls Secondary School principal, Benson Berom, said one of his teachers who had transferred in from Bougainville was taken off the payroll last payday.
“As principal of OLSH, I am working hard to make sure my teacher gets back on the payroll next payday,” he said.
However, the PNG Teachers Service Commission (TSC) report on Thursday that it was working to put back on the payroll as soon as possible the 11000 teachers who were not paid last fortnight.
TSC Commissioner Baran Sori told The National that the provincial education boards had been directed to work with the payroll section of the Education Department in Port Moresby to fix the problem.
“Teachers have a role and responsibility to educate our children and I applaud those who are still in the classroom, teaching students,” Sori said.
