INCREASING the number of tuna processing plants in Lae, Morobe, will achieve economies of scale, National Fisheries Authority managing director John Kasu says.

He said the number of investments in the fisheries sector by the private sector in PNG reflects the confidence that these investors have for the country.

Kasu highlighted that the authority had one of the best tools for managing tuna resources when it came to sustainability.

“We have a state-of-the-art vessel monitoring system, and one of the largest Fisheries Observer Programme in the world.

“The VMS limits the number of days that the fishing vessels are allowed to fish in the region and PNG.

“It is with the backing of these systems and commitment that we ensure sustainable management of our resources.

The Government is committed to ensuring that the full potential of fisheries resources benefits PNG in terms of job creation and spin-off opportunities.”
