Moresby’s Kutubu residents form group to fight crime

THE people of the oil-rich Kutubu region in the Southern Highlands and living in Port Moresby’s Morata settlement have formed a working group to fight crime in their community and seek government services.
The settlers, who claim to have been in the area for more than 17 years, said they had missed out on government services and had been victims of crime for too long.
During the launching of the group on Saturday, Roger Steven, the group’s spokesperson, said their aim was to see that five to 10 years from now their community was transformed into a peaceful community.
“We live in Port Moresby but we are struggling to survive. We wish to see changes in our lives so that we don’t live like we did in the past,” he said.
Community leader Jonathan Tai said the group would try to restore law and order by working closely with the police and other law enforcement agencies.
He said health, education, social and spiritual awareness would be among issues the group would look at to improve the lives of its members.
Foe Association Incorporated general secretary Asi Ibusubu, the guest at the launching, gave K500 to the group to start its programmes.
He gave K5,000 for sports programmes held earlier during the day.
He said as the general secretary of FAI, the umbrella arm of all the Foe people of Kutubu in the country, he would support the group and ensure they achieved their aims.
