University football club officials and the University of Papua New Guinea administration are in discussions for the Port Moresby Soccer Association outfit to return to the institution this year.
Club president Paul Karambi told The National yesterday that the club had already recruited players from the institution’s student body for the season.
“This is something that we’ve been trying to do for some time now,” he said.
“We’re trying to build the team again, we had a good talk with the university registrar along with their executive dean professor Chalapan Kaluwin and they’ve been very supportive of bringing the club back to the university.
“Firstly, we would like to connect the club back to the institution unlike the previous years where players usually came from the suburbs of Port Moresby.
“Since the early 2000s, the club was not doing enough to recruit from the university.
“Most players came from outside and over the years, it came to sense that the university was not involved in supplying players.
“This is for men and women from the university.
“We’ve already started in that direction this year, we have about 40 students in the club.”
Karambi said the move to return the club to the institution was part of an effort to provide an avenue for university students to compete in sports.
