RENOVATION work on the emergency department of the Port Moresby General Hospital is likely to resume soon, a doctor says.
Dr Sam Yockopua, from the emergency unit, said this after more than K500,000 was raised at a fund raising dinner last Thursday.
The money would be used to buy medical equipment.
Yockopua said the fund raising drive aimed to raise money to get urgent supplies, buy equipment, drugs and consumables.
“We need money to do regular services and maintenance so that it remains conducive to serve our patients,” he said.
The government donated K150,000, while the opposition gave K100,000.
Those at the dinner included politicians, government and corporate heads but it was the doctors and nurses from the hospital emergency department who took centre stage.
They auctioned signed Wallabies and Kumuls jerseys that were bought by Hugo
Cannings.
On behalf of the department, Yockopua said he was grateful for the support.
He said a reputable contractor would be engaged to avoid having the job left incomplete as the previous contractor had done.
