A SUPERMARKET manager wanted by police for questioning over a K200,000 theft in Waigani has been arrested in Goroka, Eastern Highlands.
He has admitted to police that he took the money.
Police in Goroka were tipped off by a member of the public who recognised the man from television ads.
The man allegedly took the K200,000 from the Waigani Stop N Shop supermarket.
Eastern Highlands provincial police commander Supt Augustine Wampe confirmed the arrest of the man who was originally from Meteufa Watabung sub-district in Eastern Highlands.
He has been on the run for three months.
Police apprehended him at 3pm last Saturday at the western bus stop near the Goroka main market.
Wampe said an undercover guard from City Pharmacy Ltd tipped the police off after recognising him being featured in the regular police crime stoppers on EMTV.
“The suspect was spotted at the bus stop by the informant, police were alerted and they responded quickly and picked the suspect up,” he said.
The suspect reportedly told the police that he stole the money for a reason and would cooperate with them.
He was locked up at the Goroka police cell.
He was escorted to Port Moresby yesterday afternoon on a Air Niugini flight by Sgt Bob Kongo and Snr Insp John Daviaga.
He will be charged by Port Moresby police today.
Police said the man was working as the manager of the supermarket when he allegedly opened the supermarket safe and made off with the money.
He left Port Moresby for Goroka and had been on the run there.
Wampe praised the informant, the Goroka community and police officers for a job well done to nab the suspect.
“You can commit an offence somewhere and get away to another place but the law will still catch up with you.
“I warn those who may be thinking of committing crimes and taking off elsewhere to stop,” Wampe said.
