PORT Moresby Whites won the national men’s hockey championship after defeating Port Moresby Gold 2-1 in a thrilling final at the Sir John Guise Stadium on Monday.
Whites went into the final after winning three of their four round-robin matches to finish first, with Gold finishing second.
After the match ended 0-0 at the end of regulation time, both sides went into a penalty shootout.
However, Whites came out on top and Gold bagged silver.
In the bronze playoff, East New Britain went up against Port Moresby Grey, which saw the home side winning 2-1.
Grey had a bit of an advantage, having become accustomed to playing on synthetic turfs which proved evident in their passes.
For the young ENB side, it took a while for them to adapt to the playing surface which saw them struggle at times. However, it did not stop them from putting up a strong challenge.
In the women’s division, Port Moresby Grey won gold with a 2-0 win over Port Moresby White, who settled for silver.
Port Moresby Gold took out bronze with a 1-0 win over West New Britain.
Papua New Guinea Hockey Federation president Kaluwin Potuan said the tournament had seen a lot of upcoming talent and he believed those youngsters would be stars in the coming years.
