THE morgue at the Angau Memorial Hospital in Lae, Morobe, has more than double the number of bodies it has space for, an official says.

The morgue has two coolers

and two deep refrigerators to accommodate18 and 24 bodies respectively. But it has almost 90 bodies at present.

Hospital chief executive officer Dr Jim Abrahams said the hospital planned to build a bigger morgue.

Abrahams said he would release more details after discussions with the Director of Medical Services Dr Songri Soctinec.

Meanwhile, the hospital received 12 bodies last Easter weekend – seven from the Gusap health

centre at Ramu Sugar, one from Wau, in Bulolo district, and four in Lae.

The seven from Gusap were victims of sorcery-related killings at Sakiko village in Rai Coast, Madang.

Of the four in Lae, two were women from East New Britain and Simbu respectively. The other two were men from Kubalia and Wosera, East Sepik.

Police sources said they were treating the death of the ENB woman, married to an East Sepik man, as suspicious.

A morgue official said of the seven bodies brought from Gusap, five were yet to be claimed.
