THREE second-half goals helped Morobe United beat Markham 3-2 in the Football Federation PNG Champions League’s Northern Conference in Lae yesterday.
The three-day tournament saw four teams — United, Markham, Nawaeb and Laiwaden from Madang — take part.
In the first match at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium, Nawaeb beat Laiwaden 4-3. The main game between Markham and United was evenly contested.
The Markham men kept the pressure on by keeping play confined in United territory but could not convert that opportunity into goals.
But Markham’s persistence paid off with Michael Kelvin heading a goal past United keeper Jordan Tobem in the 31st minute for a 1-0 lead.
The Welgris-sponsored United equalised through midfielder Eliude Fugre early in the second half.
The goal boosted United with striker Joshua Oscar scoring his side’s second goal to give his side the lead for the first time.
With almost 20 minutes gone in the second half of the match, hard working Alex Kamen pushed United further in front at 3-1.
Markham kept on peppering the United goal but their attempts were mostly ineffectual.
They were rewarded with a consolation goal in the 88th minute to Morgan Sam to trail 3-2.
Results: United 3 (Eliude Fugre, Joshua Oscar, Alex Kamen goals) Markham 2 (Michael Kelvin, Morgan Sam goals) HT: 1-0 (Markham) at SIK Stadium, Lae.
