THE Lae Rugby League Oval is set to be flooded with fans from every province on Sunday as the city stops to watch the Q-Cup game between the PNG Hunters and North Devils.
The Country Week fixture will be the main game of a double-header matches with the first clash a Digicel Cup round 16 game between the Enga Mioks and Lae Tigers.
Lae rugby League administrator Adrian Chow said the Q-Cup game offered fans from the Mamose and Highlands regions a chance to watch the Hunters.
Chow said the oval would be packed and he was not expecting to see any empty spaces in the stands or on the grassy inclines.
Since his appointment as LRL administrator, Chow and his team have been at work to put in place revenue source for the league.
“We rely on companies that put up their billboards at the LRL and we thank all those companies that have come onboard,” Chow said.
“With that revenue we are able to invest and spend some money to improve the exterior fencing on the playing surface and other improvements which cost quiet a lot of money.”
He said the playing surface was had also been inspected by QRL competition manager.
“The QRL competition manager advised us improve the playing surface two months ago and since then we’ve applied top soil, applied fertiliser, used a roller to smooth over the surface.
“We have spent in access of K150,000 already. Some of that money we have been able to have the support of companies such as Lae Biscuits and Prima Smallgoods.”
Chow said the infrastructure at the LRL that had been improved were the outer fence towards the Mt Lunaman side and the field.
Chow said they had liaised with Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr to have police present in numbers for crowd control and provide security for the venue.
“We had to put extra security on and had to be prepared for what may happen. We want to urge all the spectators to support their teams in the right spirit and not to create any trouble for other people because if we want these big games to come to places like Lae, we must respect the game, respect our fellow fans and accept the result whichever way it goes,” Chow said.
