MOROBE Hammerheads were crowned as round-one champions of the Kumul Petroleum Papua New Guinea Rugby Union Super Sevens Series after they beat Kimbe Rebels on Sunday.
Hammerheads stole the show in front of a jubilant crowd with a 21-15 victory at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium in Port Moresby.
Morobe bagged gold while runners-up West New Britain settled for silver. Capital Rugby Union claimed bronze.
The game started at a frantic pace as Rebels scored their first two tries in the opening four minutes to lead by 10 points.
A late try on siren by Hammerheads was successfully converted and it was 7-10 at halftime.
The second half was predicted to be tough as both teams looked to battle for the pole spot. Hammerheads did not waste time and immediately scored their second try right after the kick-off and brought the scores to 14-10.
Rebels struck back with another unconverted try which saw them lead 15-14.
But Hammerheads proved too strong for the Kimbe side.
Morobe received K4,000 and a trophy for their efforts. Meanwhile, Hammerheads coach Joe Toilip said they would look to continue the momentum this weekend.
He said his young side were eager to cause upsets over the stronger teams. “I was surprised to see my players beat Rebels as they are still young and developing their craft,” Toilip said
“But to get the win is a bonus. It proves that we’re capable of beating the stronger sides.”
