MOROBE coffee farmers are preparing to participate in the first regional coffee cup competition in Aiyura, Eastern Highlands.
Provincial coffee quality control officer Rose Romalus said the province was expecting 62 groups to participate in the competition.
“The 27 groups are already at Solop coffee mill at Erap and are preparing to shift their coffee up to the competition venue,” he said.
“Kabwum, Finchaffen and Tewai Siassi districts are yet to transport their coffee bags to Solop coffee mill for checking.
“The CIC mobile extension officers with the help of provincial quality assurance will check to make sure that farmers process their green beans in a proper way and are at competing standard to recommend them to the competition.”
Romalus said each of the groups was expected to supply 10 green bean bags to the competition.
“By mid this week, samples of the coffee bags will be transported to Aiyura,” he said.
The competition aims to promote coffee excellence and marketing opportunities for growers and farming communities while increasing trade.
There will be displays and exhibits by local exporters, roasters, cooperative groups, retailers and manufacturers in the industry at the show.
