MOROBE is expected to be the next province to implement the national identity (NID) project.
National Planning Minister Charles Abel led the signing, in which Gebob Keputong was appointed the provincial registrar.
Abel said the intention was to open NID offices in all the provinces and Kokopo would be the next one after Lae. Madang already has its office.
“Lae office is not to service Mamose, it is to service Morobe primarily, but people are welcome to still register there,” Abel said.
“Eventually, all the provinces will have their own offices, and hopefully by the end of this year, they will all be completed and set up, the basic infrastructure and staffing structure will be in place. That is the plan.”
Registrar-general Dickson Kiragi said the registrar was under the jurisdiction of Morobe.
But if anyone travelling from the Highlands or Mamose regions wanted to register there, they could do so.
“It’s a comprehensive national register that has been fully functional for more than 12 months without any major system failure,” he said.
“I am happy that we are connected to 10 provinces. In the next couple of months, we will interlink with the Alesco payroll systerm.
“We have two registers – one is the electronic register and the other is the hard copy, which is printed and archived.”
