Morobe projects getting inspected

National

A TEAM from the National Planning and Monitoring Department recently conducted a monitoring and evaluation exercise on major projects in Morobe to check on their implementation. The exercise was sanctioned by the Government which is focusing on public investment projects nationwide.
Some of the projects were the Lae City roads, Lae Tidal Basin, Angau Memorial Hospital redevelopment, Coffee Industry Corporation, Fire Services improvement, Bumbu police barracks modernisation programme and the University of Technology.
Team leader Wesley Gumenbi said there were problems in the implementation of the projects.
“The problems involved the monetary side and the physical implementation of the projects. Sometimes reports are completed and done nicely. But the actual implementation of the project does not match the report,” he said.
He said it was why the exercise was conducted to identify what went wrong and what needed to be done.
Gumenbi said they would submit a report to the Government.
“The report will determine if further funding is required or what other steps should be taken,” he said.
He explained that there are two Government budgets – recurrent and development. Recurrent is funding all the operational costs, goods and services. Development is for projects and programmes which is where PIP comes in.
