THE Morobe schools rugby carnival kicks off tomorrow with more than 100 students expected at SCRUM Oval.
Schools from four districts Bulolo, Markham, Huon Gulf and Lae will take part over the two-day event.
SCRUM junior development manager Robin Tarere said the annual schools carnival had been played by schools in Lae only for the last three years.
“The annual event is to get all the schools participating in the schools rugby programme in Lae to come together to participate in all divisions in Under-12, U14, U16, U17 and U18s,” Tarere said.
“The carnival had been split in two with tomorrow’s games to feature students from secondary schools taking part in the U17 and U18 matches and the primary schools taking part in U12, U14 and U16 on Saturday in sevens.”
Tarere said it had been a long year for the volunteers traveling to and from the highway to Markham and Huon Gulf districts to teach rugby in schools.
The purpose of the SCRUM team is to promote rugby in rural schools to reach out to the districts of Morobe.
“I believe sport cannot survive without junior programmes and my aim is to promote junior rugby and schools rugby in Morobe.
“It’s a growing sport as soccer and rugby league are big here in Morobe but we are doing it in a small way and it’s big in schools especially in Lae.”
