Morobe signs agreement with NFA

THE Morobe government has entered into a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) to support its fisheries and maritime activities.
The main support under this agreement is for the national government, through NFA, to ensure funding arrangements for fisheries projects and provide technical assistance.
The MoA covers two major on-going projects for the province which are: The Voco Point and Wagan wharf projects.
The Voco Point Fish Market project will cost almost K100 million and the Wagan wharf will cost almost K300 million.
Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Dr Lino Tom said the current wharf was always congested, leaving no space for local fishing boats, as well as a high cost of doing business for the existing on-shore fish processing industry.
He said these projects were intended to create a market and encourage local fishermen to utilise the opportunity to meet the demand, while reducing the cost of doing business for bigger fishing companies.
“Both projects have been reflected in this year’s budget, but due to cash flow issues being faced by the country, we haven’t released any funds for feasibility studies.
“ But these are very important projects, so if any money comes in, we’ll fast-track these processes,” Dr Tom said.
Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu said fisheries was an important revenue source for the province and country.
The MoA will also cover smaller jetty, market projects and facilities.
