STUDENTS at the Immanuel Lutheran School in Lae, Morobe, have signed an agreement to end their fights.
More than 500 students, parents, teachers, community leaders, church leaders and education representatives converged on Immanuel Lutheran School last Wednesday to witness the ceremony.
Lae has the biggest number of school fights annually with most being between students from different schools.
Some fights are related to cult.
Max Gendi, chaplain of the school, said the signing of the agreement to stop the fight followed another fight the day before.
He said the students, after realising that they were throwing their future away just after the Grade 10 exams, readily accepted the idea of a reconciliation.
ELC-PNG education department representative Duaro Embi, who is also a member of the provincial education board, said what the students did was for their good.
“Most schools in Lae are affected by these fights but Immanuel School, being a church agency school, is ready to assist you to have a secure future,” he said.
Embi also reminded the students that their parents had invested a lot of money, time and resources on their education.
Amba Primary School headmaster Ben Anonga said the school had given opportunities to many students who had taken up professional jobs such as teachers, policemen, bankers, managers and technical officers.
He urged students to lead a better life, challenging them to make use of the opportunities offered by Immanuel Lutheran School.
Seedlings were also planted at the spot to mark the symbolic occasion with a monument to be erected later.
Neighbouring Busu Secondary had initiated a reconciliation ceremony two years ago.
