Morobe turns to boxing

 THE first Morobe Boxing Club championship will be held over June 1-2 at Wagau Primary School in  the Buang local level government, Bulolo district.

Clubs that will enter fighters are the Unitech, Malabu, Kamku­mung, Eriku, Wau, Bulolo, Baiyune, Mumeng, Jamo and host, Wagau Boxing Club.

Bulolo Amateur Boxing Association president Kevin Sam, the younger brother of former Morobe and PNG boxing star the late John Sam, said clubs were preparing well.

The men and women fighters will contest the 49kg to 91kg divisions and the selectors will pick the best to represent the province to the Kokopo National Championship next month and the PNG Games in 2014, Sam said.

Sam, who is chairman of the organising committee, was pleased with local MP and deputy opposition leader Sam Basil for buying a boxing ring. He is calling on bu­siness houses in Bulolo, Lae, Morobe and the country to call him on 72030388 if they wanted to sponsor the tournament.
