University of Papua New Guinea students from Morobe are doing a week-long awareness programme in schools in Lae, Markham and Huon Gulf districts this week to encourage students to do tertiary education.
The programme is an initiative of the Morobe Students Union to support communities in the province. They will be visiting sevens high schools and secondary schools in Lae, and one school each in Markham and Huon Gulf.
The schools listed are Malahang Technical High School, Emmanuel Lutheran Secondary, Busu Secondary, Bumayong Lutheran Secondary, Lae Secondary, AOG Secondary, Bugandi Secondary, Markham Valley Secondary and Wawin National High Schools.
They are focusing on the theme, “my choice, my life” to inspire and motivate students to reach the tertiary education level.
Former union president Eheyupe Erinuc said they discussed school fights, drug and alcohol abuse, and how students could make good choices after completing grade 12.
“This is part of our community service,” Erinuc said.
“For most of us, our provincial government have been sponsoring our school fees. Therefore we want to give back to the province in whatever little way we can.
“We will also present gifts to each of the nine schools that we visit. The gifts, worth a total of K10,000, include guitars, basketballs, soccer balls, rugby balls, wheelie bins, rakes and spades.”
