VILLAGERS in the Wasu local government area in Tewae Siassi, Morobe, say courses on marine conservation and fish preparation will help protect their marine life and improve their livelihoods.

Denson Jahvon, programme manager for local conservation group Sartelia Marine, said in Lae last Thursday they had been helping people establish marine protected areas around their reefs over the past seven years and that had boosted awareness on the importance of fish and other marine life to their well-being.

Javhon said the group consisted of a representative each from the 19 villages in the Wasu local level government area, near Finschhafen.

He said a two-week training course was held last month at Malasanga village for villagers to learn basic ways of fish handling and preservation.
