Motorists: Upgrading taking too long

MOTORISTS and commuters in Lae are concerned that the upgrading and maintenance of roads in the city are taking too long.

Road construction company East West closed a section of the Markham Road from Huon-Markham to Lae Yacht Club junction for 10 days starting last Friday.

This is to allow for drainage and driveway construction as well as priming and sealing.

Businesses are concerned at the closure saying it should only be for two days and then half the road should be re-opened for traffic access.

Road users travelling downhill on Huon Road from town are also frustrated at having to re-route when trying to access the Butibam Road to Malahang and Back Road areas.

At the bottom of the T junction of Huon and Markham roads, vehicles have to turn left towards the helipad, right towards the Morobe Park junction and left again towards Chinatown and Malahang.

Road travel in the area had been earlier affected when Shorncliffe worked on the Markham Road section from the Markham-Coronation roads roundabout to the Markham-Huon roads roundabout.

While residents applaud the upgrading and maintenance of the roads, many feel the works are taking too long and causing a lot of inconvenience.
