MOUKELE bagged the Dulux Women’s Central Cup after defeating Gabagaba by three wickets in the grand final on Saturday at the Gabagaba sports ground.
With the toss in favour of Moukele, the ladies from Fishermen Island stepped onto the crease with all the fire power they could muster up.
The openers were just too good with Olewa Kila putting up 26 while Kopi Kwara smashed a 25.
But the real action came in after the first drop with Moukele’s Rakuna Kwara who hit one boundary and five massive sixes from just ten balls faced to nail a massive total of 34.
But all thanks were given to Gabagaba’s Gita Renai who showed two of those big hitters off the field.
Moukele then laid the ball to rest at the 10th and final over to bring the target for Gabagaba to 114.
In front of a vocal home crowd, things began slowly for the Gabagaba women who seemed to lack the hitting power that brought them through to the competition’s grand final.
Only the opener Ake Oaure hit Gabagaba’s highest with 26 while Obaha Lea steadied the runs with 13.
But unfortunately after 10 overs, Gabagaba found themselves with a total of 6/81, leaving Moukele the victors of the 2010 Dulux Women’s Central Cup.
Both Gabagaba and Moukele earned the right to play off in the grand final after winning their respective division championships.
Cricket PNG’s national games development manager Gayan Loku stated that “both these teams have showed great form in their division championships as well as the semi-finals,” and was glad that the tournament was a success.
Cricket PNG has organised this event is in celebration of the PNG Women’s Lewas Cricket Team that will be going to the 2010 Pepsi ICC East Asia Pacific (EAP) Women’s Trophy in Sano, Japan, in May where PNG is currently ranked 15th in the world for women’s cricket.
