THE country’s national capital should be moved to Arona Valley in the Eastern Highlands.
Arona Valley is right in the centre of PNG, with fair climate, making it ideal for our parliamentarians and bureaucrats to congregate and enjoy quiet times while making the right decisions for our country.
We need a national capital that will stand out and has unique architectural features to promote PNG’s diverse cultural heritage to the rest of the world.
Buildings in the new national capital should be designed to depict the 22 different provinces and all national departments such as the PNGRC headquarters and the Supreme Court should be located here.
As for costs, there is enough money in government coffers to create a new national capital.
Port Moresby can become the capital of Central province as it used to be prior to 1975 and become PNG’s commercial hub.
It can be governed by a metropolitan city council and still maintain the four electorates, except that the regional seat would come under Central province.
Waigani can host the city council headquarters and Independence Hill, while Konedobu, the historical site of colonial government, can host the Central provincial government and administration headquarters.
The current parliament building can become a national monument and Murray Barracks can be PNG’s “Pentagon”.
People of Eastern Highlands and Central province should vote for regional and open candidates as well as political parties that promise to relocate the nation’s capital from Port Moresby to Arona Valley.
Are there any candidates out there who would try out this idea?
