Move to ban recond cars a joke

Letters, Normal

A POLICE officer has suggested that we ban the import of reconditioned cars from overseas, claiming that they are the cause for the increase in the number of road accidents.
Shall I laugh or cry?
Laugh, because it is such a silly conclusion on the part of the officer.
He obviously did not have his thinking cap on.
Cry, because it only proves that we have ranking officers of such poor calibre in the police force.
What hope is there?
No one can deny that 99.99% of the imported cars are still better than the junks that are on our roads.
Whose responsibility is it to ensure that only roadworthy vehicles are allowed on the road?
Many vehicles are without working headlights, indicator lights, bumpers, decent tyres and so on.
Many have plastic sheets replacing their rear windshield which surely endangers both the driver and other road users.
Why are all these allowed?
At roadblocks, the police never haul up these offenders.
Instead, they usually target vehicles driven by foreigners, perhaps in the hope of receiving some gratification.
I shall not even start to talk about some of the drivers allowed on the road, in particular the taxi and PMV drivers, who behave as if they are the only ones on the road.
So I say to this “senior police inspector” to use some common sense before he makes another silly suggestion.
