HEAVY rains have caused widespread flooding and havoc in parts of Central, with Abau MP Sir Puka Temu calling on emergency authorities to visit and assess the situation on the ground.
Sir Puka said in parliament that food gardens “are under water and roads and bridges have been washed away”.
He said part of Central had done their planting in the wet season and the rains for the past three to four days had destroyed their crops.
“Today is the harvest season and our gardens are under water and road culverts have been washed away.”
In his questions to Inter-Government Relations Minister Job Pomat, who is responsible for national disaster services, Sir Puka said a team from his district had done an initial assessment and “it will require K6 million in assistance for the people”.
“I ask if the minister responsible can send a disaster team to assess the situation on the ground to verify what my district officers have provided.”
Pomat promised to send a team to the area as soon as possible to assess the damage and report to him.
