RAI COAST MP and chairman of inter-government relations James Gau says the main priority for his district administration is to improve accessibility for the 60,000 people in his electorate.
Road maintenance machinery has been purchased to open up links to enable people to travel, sell their produce and do other businesses.
“I’m very thankful to the government for its assistance in the construction of two vital bridges which will be completed in the next two years,” Gau said.
Work on the Yuwar Bridge is on target to be completed this year while construction of the Minjeng Bridge has commenced and it is expected to be ready for use by next year.
The Rai Coast MP said he is confident that with the government’s focus on rural infrastructure, an all-weather road will be available to his people to use soon.
He said his district administration was aware of the dangers encountered by people when travelling at sea to gain access to basic services and market their produce.
“We are seriously looking at the possibility of purchasing a vessel for transporting cargo and passengers between Rai Coast and Madang town, as well as other coastal areas.
“We will pursue it up with relevant agencies and stakeholders in the government.”
Gau said he believed his people would see implementation of these this year.
“In order for these to be realised, necessary funding and resources from the government must move freely and effectively to district levels around the country.”
