PAPUA New Guinean honourary Consul-General in Auckland, New Zealand, Dr Peter Goldsmith, died on Saturday.
Wapenamanda MP Rimbink Pato, in a statement, said Goldsmith had made a significant contribution to PNG, having served as honourary consul for nearly two decades.
“Before that, he had an extensive and accomplished career in engineering, including as managing director of Fraser Thomas Engineers, helping to launch the company internationally to PNG,” Pato said. “Goldsmith led a voluntary delegation of engineers and geotech scientists during the Aitape tsunami.
“He did the initial feasibility for the future Tsak Valley hydro project in my electorate, and really worked hard to cement the trade and investment relationship between NZ and PNG.”
Pato said he had an excellent relationship with Goldsmith throughout his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and also on a personal level.
“I mourn the sudden and untimely loss of Peter,” Pato said.
