MP blames alcohol for social disorder in SHP

LIQUOR is the root cause of the many social disorders experienced in  Southern Highlands and police should continue to discourage illegal outlets, an MP says.
Nipa-Kutubu MP Jeffery Komal The National that his district was the worst in armed robbery, cargo looting, tribal fights and other law and order problems but things had changed.
Komal praised police in Poroma for doing an outstanding job in confiscating cartons of liquor smuggled in by a public servant.
“I congratulate you (Poroma police) for a well-done job. I do not drink beer and will not entertain beer in my electorate. Since alcohol was first introduced to Papua New Guineans, it has developed a culture and alcohol abuse is a gendered phenomenon and plays an important part in most of the rape cases,” he said.
Komal said through a liquor ban, the province was experiencing peace but there were reports of production of homebrew and LLG presidents, councillors and community leaders should report to police and help destroy homebrew-producing equipment.
